18,934. Wearne, R. L. Sept. 19. Washing-machines.-Relates to means for effecting the rise and fall as well as the rotary oscillation of a tub in which is a fixed rubbing-disk. The clothes and washing-fluid being introduced and the disk 28 being fixed at a suitable height above the bottom, the handle is oscillated horizontally, carrying with it the tub and the shaft 12. So long as the motion is small, the pins 54 move freely in their recesses and the tub moves only horizontally. When the motion is increased, these pins push against stops 56 and carry a bar 45 round with them. Yokes 46 are thus deflected from the vertical so that the bar 45 is lifted, carrying with it the shaft 12 and the tub, and thus squeezing the clothes. The legs 10 unite at the top in a frame 11, through the centre of which passes the supporting-shaft 12 for the tub. To the top of this shaft is secured a frame 30, from which extend arms 32 carrying the tub. The shaft 12 is supported by a frame 36, Fig. 2, having arms carrying at their ends lugs 37 which are attached to the legs 10, and having also a pair of cross-bars on the arms, in which are semicircular recesses lined with cups 42. Balls on the ends of the yokes 46 rest in these cups, the lower similar ends of these yokes supporting a bar 45, a step bearing in which carries the lower end of the shaft 12. Arms 13 extend from the frame 11 in which the legs unite, and the lower ends of frame bars or tubes 14 are secured to them. The tops of these bars carry caps connected by a bar 17 and supporting arms 18, 19. A bar 21 is connected to the arm 18 by a universal joint, and carries a bracket 24 to which is clamped a central verticallyadjustable rod passing through the lid of the washtub and carrying a disk 28. The end of the bar 21 is socketed to receive the arm 19, to which it is locked by an eccentric lever 23. The tub has an outlet with a plug 34 and an operating-handle 35.
