Abstract

16,294. Soc. de Constructions MÚcaniques d'Alais. Dec. 1, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Drying coal &c.-A rotary sheetsteel kiln a arranged in a simple brickwork casing is provided internally with longitudinal angle-irons g and helical blades h so that coal &c. entering from a hopper k is gradually conveyed to the other end and is traversed in the passage by a mixture of furnace gases and air. The kiln is provided with rims d, e running on rollers f. At the discharge end, it rests by means of a spider and a spindle c on a bearing b. The settings consist of a pair of thick brickwork walls joined by an arch forming the bottom of the kiln chamber, which is covered at the top with insulating-material. The shell p of the firebox is slightly separate from the brickwork. Air entering at the damper-controlled opening r passes round the sides and back of the space thus left. Air is admitted at the controlled opening q for the combustion of the fuel, and the resulting flames meet the other body of heated air and are forced by baffles u to take a circuitous course twice round the kiln, finally entering it free from flame at the coal exit. The greatest external heat is thus applied to the newly-entered moist coal. The gases, air, and the steam from the coal are drawn by a suction fan through the spaces left by the helical blades and through the pipe j, and are finally dispersed into the atmosphere. The coal enters the kiln through an automatic valve on the hopper which prevents entry of air, and the exit is provided with a like valve. The coal falling to the bottom of the kiln is raised by one of the angleirons g, which, when in a certain position, allows it to fall on one of the blades h, whereby it is moved slightly onward till it is caught by another iron g. The furnace used may be arranged to utilize waste gases, such as those from coke furnaces.
