Abstract
14,660. Harrison, F. July 17. Vacuum tubes. - Mercury and other vapour lamps are constructed with tubes having several arms and with more than two electrodes, so that they can be run at various voltages and on threewire and other circuits, a part or the whole of each lamp being lit. In one form (not shown), the lamp comprises arms radiating from a central chamber containing one electrode, the other electrodes being at the ends of the arms. Figs. 3 and 5 show in plan and elevation another form, in which the arms A and, in some cases, parts of the circular tube Y become luminous. The lamps may otherwise be shaped like the letters V, U, L, C, &c. To start the lamps, division of the mercury is effected by series heating-coils J wound on the tubes, these coils serving also as steadying-resistances. Chambers C are provided to receive the liquid mercury, and other chambers H are situated near the heating- coils J. According to the Provisional Specification, the vapour pressure in a lamp may be regulated by providing at an electrode a tube of U or other shape, having in some cases a bulb at its end ; and a number of separate lamps may be arranged radially.
