Abstract

14,210. Siemens Bros. & Co., [Siemens Schuckertwerke Ges.]. July 10. Switches.-In switching in and out of circuit sources of electromotive force, such as accumulator cells and sections of transformers, where an auxiliary smaller counter-electromotive force is simultaneously included or excluded in order to reduce the sudden alterations of pressure, an additional switch, of known kind, is interconnected with the motion of the sliding brushes, in order to prevent sparking at the fixed contacts over which the latter move. As shown applied to cell switches, Fig. 2, the cells z are connected in groups of two to the fixed contacts c, over which move brushes k<1>, k<2>, fixed together and mutually insulated, with their other ends sliding over bars s', s<2>, leads from which run to contacts ab, a<1>b<1> of the spark-preventing switch. A counter cell z<1> is interposed as shown, and a resistance w connects the contact a<1>b<1> with a contact m. A switch bar sets itself in accordance with the position of the brushes k<1>, k<2>, so as to make circuit first with and then without the cell z<1> and the resistance w, and takes the spark, if any. Fig. 3 shows the preferred form of construction of the spark-preventing switch, with a quadrantal contact on a conducting axis, which is connected so as to describe a complete revolution while one of the brushes moves from one contact-piece to the next.
