Abstract

13,119. Scott, R. L. June 24. Sleepers, railway, are made from concrete which is strengthened by embedding therein a longitudinally-disposed metal bar. Fig. 2 shows a sectional side view of a portion of a sleeper and Fig. 3 a transverse section. The bar a, shown detached in end view and plan in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively, is placed near the bottom surface of the concrete block and has its flanges c sheared and bent so as to anchor in the concrete. Plates d, having holes e in them which are accurately spaced to receive the holding-down bolts for the chairs, are secured to the bar a by the bolts or rivets f. During the moulding of the sleeper, the bar a is supported on the bent flange pieces g and the cores for forming the holes for the holding-down bolts are supported by the plates d. Fig. 7 shows the cross-section of a modified form of the bar a.
