Abstract

13,053. Ainley, J. S. June 24. Washing.-In a machine for washing textile piece goods, the fabric is alternately immersed in the washing-liquor and squeezed, the ends being joined together and the fabrics traversed to and fro, as many times as desired, through one or more sets of three or more rollers, preferably two sets of three each. The two sets of rollers 2, 2<1>, 2<2> and 3, 3<1>, 3' are mounted in suitable bearings in a tank or vessel. containing the washing-liquor. The surfaces of the rollers are normally maintained in contact by ordinary yielding devices of adjustable springs or levers and weights. One roller, such as 3, is driven, the roller 2 being driven therefrom by a belt 6 or chain or toothed gear. The other rollers of each set are driven from the rollers 3, 2 by means of belts 4, 9 and adjustable tension pulleys 5, 10, respectively or by frictional contact or by gearing. The fabric A passes first over an idle roller 11, then between the squeezing-rollers 2<1>, 2<2>, and over a traverse roller 12 driven by a belt 12<1>. The fabric then hangs in the tank 1 and passes over a roller 13, between the squeezing- rollers 3<1>, 3<2>, and over a traverse pulley 14 driven by a belt 14'. It then passes down and up through adjacent, and preferably adjustable, openings in a suitable draft-board, or other guiding-means, 15, a length again hanging in the liquor, then back over a roller 16, through squeezing-rollers 3, 3<1>, over a traverse roller 17, a roller 18, again dipping between these, through squeezing-rollers 2, 2<1>, over another traverse roller 19, and so down through an opening in a draft-board 20, opposite the one left in the draft-board 15, into the liquor again. The end is brought up through an adjacent opening and secured to the other end. The tank 1 may be provided with partitions to prevent entanglement of the depending portions of the fabric. Two or more pieces of fabric may be joined together end to end to form an endless fabric, and two or more such endless fabrics, suitably drafted, may be run through the machine side by side, the drafts of each being guided to separate portions of the rollers and kept apart from each other. In washing certain classes of fabric, such as those woven from previously unscoured yarns, a sud-tank 21 may be provided under each set of squeezing-rollers. At the beginning of an operation the dirt and spent liquor squeezed out of the fabric is conducted away through opened outlets 22. When the main portion of the dirt has been removed, the outlets 22 are closed and movable doors or sides 21<1> are opened or removed to allow the expressed liquor to fall back into the tank 1.
