Abstract

12,297. Lowry, R. C. June 13. Grip of wheels, increasing.-The adhesion between the running wheels 2, Fig. 1, of a truck and the rails on which it runs is increased by means of an electro-magnet 3, the magnetic circuit of which is completed through the wheels and the rail. The magnet cores 1 form bars of the truck frame and are so wound as to have consequent poles at magnetic blocks 15, which contain non-magnetic bearings for auxiliary wheels 18. These are carried by springs which normally raise them out of contact with the rails. When the magnet is excited, the flux passes from the blocks 15 across the narrow air gaps, shown in Fig. 5, to the wheels 18, the circuits being completed through the rail. The ends of the magnet have pole-pieces 4, Fig. 3, formed integrally with or separably from the core and so shaped as to come close to the running wheels 2. The hangers 5 and the transverse distance-pieces which connect the magnets on opposite sides of the car are preferably of non-magnetic metal. In a modification shown in Fig. 8, the magnet is suspended directly from the axles by non- magnetic hangers 23, which bear on the inner surfaces of the wheel hubs. The blocks 15<a> forming the consequent poles are formed integrally with the core, and only one auxiliary wheel 18a is employed, this being mounted on the outer side of the magnet.
