Abstract
11,788. Lake, S. June.5. Ventilating s h i p s; controlling automatically.-Air is admitted to a submarine vessel through a casing attached to the upper part of the conning-tower. The casing 7 is provided with air-inlet holes 8 supplying the air duct 9, at each end of which is placed a valve. The lower end of the casing is opened to allow any water which enters to escape. The valve 11 is normally held off its seat by compressed air in the cylinder 15 against the action of a spring 18. Should the water rise in the casing 7, an electric circuit is closed by the connexion of the mutually - insulated contacts 25, 26, and the solenoid 28 is energized, thereby operating the valve 21 bv the core 29 and exhausting the air from the cylinder 15. Should the electric controlling-device fail, the water raises the float 32 and operates by the lever 23 the valve 21, thus also closing the valve 11. The inlet aperture of the conning-tower is also provided with a valve 43 having a drip-pan 49 screwed on its stem. An inrush of water closes the valve 43 by filling the pan 49. The spring 51 is of sufficient strength just to keep the valve open when the pan is empty. The valve 43 may - be permanently closed by screwing the drip-pan 49 farther on to the stem.
