Abstract
10,199. Patten, J. S. May 31, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 19011. Dust, excluding; oil, retaining.-A dust guard and oil-retaining device for the axle-box of a railway vehicle, street car, &c. consists of the plate E, preferably of soft wood with the grain vertical, but it may be made of other material such as iron, brass, fibre, asbestos. The plate fits over the axle A, and is held against one face of the recess B‹ in the axlebox, and partly supported, by the projecting ends f of spring wires F abutting against the opposite face of the recess. The wires lie in grooves or apertures at the top and bottom of the plate, and are bent over in the notches e'. A flat spring, held in place by nails or bolts e<4>, may be used as shown in Fig. 6. The plate may have recesses for the spring arms f, as shown in Fig. 3. In place of the arms f, V-shaped springs may be used.
