IMPROVEMENT IN Q AR=AXLE LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 175,779, dated April 4, 1876; application filed January 21, 1876.
To all iuhom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER SWEENEY, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OarAxle Lubricators, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section.

My invention relates to'certain improvements in lubricators for car-axles; and consists in an absorbent pad which is constructed of alternate strips of felt and rawhide, such strips being fastened together, while the whole is adapted to be placed within a car-axle box in such a manner that the axle bears on the edges of the rawhide strips, and by these means I obtain a lubricator which is compact and durable, and one which has a very efi'ective lubricating-surface.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a series of felt strips, and B are strips of raw hide composing my lubricator. These strips A B are placed side by side and alternate with each other or, in other words, the felt strips A are separated from each other by the strips B of rawhide. The felt strips A are intended to absorb the lubricating substance contained in the axle-box O, in which my lubricator may be placed, and to convey such substance to the axle D, while the office of the strips of rawhide B is, in part, to support the felt strips in a vertical position. Any other absorbent material may be substituted for the felt, and since rawhide has the property of absorbing oil or other lubricators to a certain extent, while it retains its hardness and durability, a lubricating-pad is obtained which possesses great advantages. The strips A B are fastened together in any suitable manner, and I have in this example employed for this purpose bands at a of sheet metal, which pass transversely under the strips, and which are secured to plates E E, placed parallel to and exterior of the strips. To the bands at a are added one or more bolts, F, which are made to passthrough the several strips, so as to hold them firmly together irrespective of the bands. The strips A B, when fastened together, rest on springs G G, which, in this example, are attached to the connecting-bands a a. The absorbent strips A are made of a less width than the rawhide strips B, the width being such that the absorbent strips may be made to project downwardly between and beyond the connecting-bands a a, as
shown, while the height of the rawhide strips B is greater than that of the absorbent strips A, so that only the edges of the rawhide strips come in contact with the axle when my lubricator is placed in the box 0 in such a way that the strips occupy a vertical position.
When my lubricator is placed in position the axle D bears on the rawhide strips B, which are kept supplied with lubricating ma terial by the absorbent strips, and consequently a very effective and durable lubricating-surface is presented to the axle, while, moreover, my lubrica-tor has a compact form and can be easily handled.
My lubricator may be placed within the axle-box in one section in case the opening in the box is sufficiently large to permit of its introduction; or it may bemade in two or more sections, each small enough to be introduced into the axle-box.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lubricator for car-axles, constructed of alternate strips A of felt and strips B of rawhide, or their equivalent material, such strips being fastened together and composing an absorbent pad, substantially as described.
