Sewage, treating; bacteriological processes; effluent, treating.- Sewage, which may have been previously treated, is submitted to bacterial action on a smooth, corrugated, or stepped surface over which it is sprayed or otherwise discharged. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, sewage is supplied by the pipe a to a tipping-bucket b, whence it passes into the trough c and under the weir-board d on to the surfaces e, g, j. In a modification, a single tray, flat or slightly inclined, is used, the sewage being discharged by means of a siphon in a tank attached. Fig. 3 shows a purifying-surface d to which the sewage is distributed by means of rotary arms c, and Fig. 4 a surface f which receives effluent from a filter d from the trough e.
