Abstract
9523. Cowern, W. May 5. Sewage and foul waters, treating; filtering. - Sewage or other liquid is supplied under pressure to the compartment b, Fig. 1, of the filter a through the pipe g, passes through the opening k to the compartment c, and then through the filter blocks r to the compartment d, which is furnished with an outlet pipe h. The opening k is fitted with a supply valve actuated by means of a screw-threaded rod m from outside the casing. The filter blocks may be of cylindrical or other form. Any kind of porous stone may be used, but "Oamaru or Mount "Somers" stone, consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate, is stated to be specially suitable. The blocks are closed at the top and have their hollows over apertures arranged in concentric circles in the partition f. A small platform to support the block is fitted to each aperture, and the block is pressed down upon the platform'by a screw s bearing on a cap t. The screws are threaded through rings u held in position by studs passing upwards from the partition f. To cleanse the blocks, the valve k is closed and water or steam from the compartment b is forced down the perforated pipes x and sprayed upon the blocks, the impurities being driven out through the pipe o and valve j. Fig. 5 shows a method of working several of these filters in parallel. The inlet pipes g branch from the main supply pipe 4, and the outlet pipes h deliver the filtered liquid to pipes 5 connected with the pipes 4 on the other side of a valve 7 by branches 6.
