Abstract
9334. Buck, F. C. May 3. Lift valves; actuating valves and cocks.-Relates to lift valves which are actuated, both for opening and closing, by the inlet pressure. One form of valve is shown in Fig. 4. The valve g, which may be of any usual form, slides in a chamber d which is connected to the inlet and outlet branches respectively by the by-passes e, f. The area of the seat c is less than the area of the upper part q of the valve. A needle or other stop valve i closes the outlet by-pass and is actuated by a lever j. The inlet by-pass is provided with a screw to facilitate cleaning. When the small valve i is closed, the upper part of the valve is subjected to the inlet pressure, and in consequence of the excess area the main valve is pressed to its seat. On the small valve being opened, the pressure above the main valve is reduced and the latter is lifted by the pressure below the seat c. The main valve is provided with a stop to prevent it from covering the by-pass passages. The valve g is of special construction, the constituent parts being shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. r is a disk with a spindle p. The cupped washer q, which is preferably of leather, is screwed on the upper part of the disk by means of a nut t and washers. A rubber washer w, which forms the meeting face of the valve, is screwed to the disk r by the apertured cup u. Various minor details may be omitted or modified.
