9184. Niblock, F. May 2. Pistons.-Split packing- rings 6, 7 are pressed apart by a twisted split ring 8, which also clasps shoulders 9, 10 on the rings, and so prevents undue expansion. The joint between these shoulders is bevelled, so that the ring 6 cannot expand without expanding the ring 7 also. The ring 8 is formed from a ring which originally forms the frustum of a very flat cone. The ring near the split is pressed flat, while the ring is turned or planed level. The ring is then turned over and cut to a uniform thickness.
