Door-closing apparatus.-A spring- controlled d o o r - closing device, applicable to doors that may be opened in either direction, is contained in a cylindrical casing M, closed at the bottom and having a rectangular flange M<1> surrounding the open top, which is provided with a cover or lid M<2> held in position by a screw M<4> extending through the cover and into a boss M<5> on the interior face of the casing bottom. Screws passing through holes M<7> both in cover and flange fix the device to the floor beneath the door. The pivot N<1>, Fig. 8, holding the upper part of the door projects from a plate N attached to the under face of the lintel, and engages with a socket n in an L-shaped piece N<2>, which is sunk into the top corner of the door. This piece N<2> is cast with a recess or pocket n<1> adjacent to the socket and connected therewith by a passage n<2> ; lubricant may then be stored in the pocket n<1>, whence it is conducted to the pin and socket friction surfaces. The spring G which closes the door is helical, and the ends, top and bottom, are bent abruptly from the outer circle straight to, and coiled closely round, a centre pivot or pintle D. The pintle D has a square or rectangular projecting end D<1>, which engages, and is operated by, a corresponding recess in a sole-plate attached to the bottom edge of the door. L-shaped lugs D3, D<5> are formed on the pintle D and are so placed as to come just outside the parts G<3>, G<4> of the spring G coiled round the pintle D. Other lugs M<8>, M9 are fixed to the lower and upper rigid parts respectively of the casing, just outside the lugs on the pintle, as shown in Fig. 5. The spring is attached to the pintle with a certain amount of tension, being coiled up about a quadrant beyond its normal shape. On the door being opened in either direction, the pintle D is rotated, and one of the lugs, according to the direction of rotation, carries round with it the straight part of the spring facing it ; the corresponding part of the opposite end of the spring is retained by the fixed lug in that part of the casing ; the spring is thus further coiled up, and the tension thereby produced closes the door when the latter is released.
