April 1. lroning-machines.-The bed with which the feltcovered roller revolves in contact consists of a series of separate steam pipes through the spaces between which steam from the calendered articles escapes. The pipes may be square, in which case the edges against which the articles treated advance are rounded off. The ends of the pipes are connected with semicircular steam passages in casings 8 held together by nuts on bolts 14 passing through the pipes. Tightening-screws 19 are provided, by the operation of which the last few pipes may be brought near the roller to give a better finish to the articles.
