Abstract

5892. Clama, A. March 20. Valves and valve-gear. - In an apparatus for supplying gas under pressure to gas burners, comprising a flexible - diaphragm pump or bellows operated directly by an hydraulic motor, the distributing - valve for the motor consists of a sliding piston operated by springs compressed, through the medium of an auxiliary piston, by the motive fluid ; it is stated that the valve may be applied to any kind of single-acting engine or motor and may be actuated by any fluid under pressure. The distributing-valve comprises a double. headed piston l, m mounted on a hollow spindle s<1> which is operated in the downward direction by a spring o and in the upward direction by a spring r, when released from a holding-lever D pivoted at P and adapted to engage the upper and lower sides respectively of a, flanged collar v<1> on the spindle this holding-lever is maintained in contact with the motor piston-rod e and releases the spindle near the end of each stroke by being pushed aside by conical surfaces e', e' on the piston-rod. An auxiliary piston q carried by the lower half of a divided spindle s sliding within the hollow spindle s<1> is actuated by the motive fluid to compress the springs ; this spindle s carries pins t, t<1> passing through slots in the hollow spindle and supporting sliding rings or flanges u, n forming the movable abutments of the springs ; the fixed abutments are an adjustable nut v on the hollow spindle and a bracket p respectively. A two-stroke cycle is as follows :-The piston l, m being depressed, pressure water is admitted below the motor piston e<3>, while part passes by way of the pipe z<1> to raise the piston q and compress the springs. Near the end of the stroke, the released spindle s<1> permits the spring r to expand partly and raise the piston l, m into the position shown ; the further expansion of the spring, now acting upon the lower half of the spindle s, below the dividing-pin t, effects the return of the auxiliary piston q. During the downstroke, the weight of the motor piston affects the exhaust of the dead water, and near the end of the stroke the release of the spindle permits the spring o again to lower the piston l, m. If, owing to a sudden diminution of pressure, the piston q cannot be raised sufficiently to compress the springs, the piston l, m is prevented from rising to a position which permits of a free flow from the inlet to the dead-water outlet by reason of a pivoted lever F engaging the collar v<1> ; this lever is maintained against the spindle s and in normal working is turned aside into an inoperative position by a cone w on the spindle.
