Phenylglycine is separated from the products of reaction of chloracetic acid and aniline by converting it into its anilide, separating this anilide, and saponifying it with caustic soda. In practice, excess of aniline is used, and the reaction mass is distilled preferably in vacuo to remove water. The mass is then made alkaline, and is steamdistilled to remove excess of aniline. The anilide which separates out from the residual liquid on cooling is filtered off and washed with cold water, It is then saponified by heating with caustic alkali.
