Abstract

5347. Clarkson, T. March 14. Water - tube boilers; instantaneous generators ; feed-water, heating ; superheaters, steam.-Relates to generators of the coil or flash type, particularly suitable for use on motor vehicles and the like. The coils are so arranged that in themselves they trap the steam and prevent it from rising to the water-inlet end of the generator. In the form shown, a series of involute coils are supported in a convenient casing. Each coil is formed conical, the apices of the coils being directed upwards or downwards. Water is introduced at the lower end a of the uppermost coil, and after circulating therethrough passes from the apex by the pipe A<1> to the lower convolution of the second coil, After passing through this coil, the water and steam are led by a similar pipe A' to the lower convolution of the third coil, and so on. The diameter of the coil may be the same throughout, but preferably the diameter is increased towards the lower part of the generator as shown at a'. Still lower, at a<2>, the thickness of the metal is increased. Steam is withdrawn from the lower end of the generator. The pipes A' serve as distance-pieces and, in plan, appear staggered. Distance-pieces C, some only of which are shown, are also fitted. Preferably, a feedwater-heating coil H is provided. The parts are retained in position by a four-armed support D and by plates G, the bolt E<1> connecting them. A thermostat may be employed to control the heat supply, the steam being led to the therrmostat by the pipe A<3>. From the thermostat the steam is passed through the superheating- coil A*. When the generator is composed of a number of separate coils, the joints at the lower end are preferably placed outside the casing and contructed in such a manner that they can readily be broken in order to replace a burnt-out section.
