Abstract

4144. Luke, W. Feb. 28. Faslenings.-The battens for securing the tarpaulins of ships' hatches and skylights are secured in place by the wedge B acting in conjunction with the cleat A which carries a pin a<1> provided with a square neck and may be either bolted or riveted to the hatch coaming. The wedge proper is oblong, and the lower part B<2> is round and fitted with a snug b which prevents accidental displacement. In operation, the wedge is inserted through a hole in the cleat A, turned so that it bears on the batten G, and finally driven home.
