Abstract

2023. Brown, H. E. Feb. 1. Brakes.-Relates to means for automatically reducing the pressure of the brake blocks on the wheels of railway or other vehicles as the speed is reduced and the coefficient of friction increased. The tangential pull of the brake blocks, when it exceeds a certain limit, is arranged to act through rods and levers upon the lever which applies the blocks, in such a manner as to reduce the force acting upon it, whether that force be applied by an automatic pressure or vacuum brake or by other means. In an arrangement shown in Fig. 1, adapted for a vacuum brake, the brake blocks a are connected by rods a' to levers b, each having two fulcra b<1> so as to act in either direction of running. Springs prevent the levers from moving until the pull exceeds a certain limit. The levers b then act through a rod c and a pawl h upon a toothed quadrant g fixed to the brake lever g. A stop i acting on the tail h<1> of the pawl h disengages it when the pull on the rod c ceases. In a pressure brake, the rod c may act through a lever and a pawl upon a toothed rod connected to the piston-rod. In the case of a bogie vehicle, the rod c is jointed to permit lateral motion, and the stop i is connected to a bracket on the bogie by a jointed rod, parallel to and carried by the rod c.
