Abstract

1829. Korselt, E., Ramet, C., and Thomas, A. Jan. 30, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Processes.-An oiling operation is introduced in the process for treating washed waste, i.e., flax waste which has fallen from spinning-frames and then been washed and dried in the open air or by steam to enable finer yarns to be spun therefrom. The dried waste is passed through a devil or teazer which separates and shortens the fibres, and is then conveyed to an opening-machine constructed with a large drum studded with strong straight steel pins. This machine arranges the fibres so that they are more easily treated by the ravelling- machine or waste opener, which opens and shortens the fibres and threads. The oil is then applied prior to passing the fibres several times through a scutcher, then through a set of carding-engines, and finally to a mule or continuous spinning- machine. The fibres may be mixed with other fibres of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin prior to spinning.
