Abstract

28,729. Weed, E. B. Dec. 29. Wood, treating for preserving &c. - Wood is prepared for preserving or other treatment such as dyeing by first driving out part of the natural constituents, such as water, resins, &c., in a bath of resin, a non-volatile hydrocarbon, or similar substance which has a relatively high boiling point and a melting point below the temperature attained by the wood, to prevent the formation of a coating on the wood. The wood while still hot is treated with gasoline, alcohol, or other neutral non-aqueous solvent of resins, terpenes, aud other remaining natural constituents of the wood, and the solution thus formed is expelled by immersing in a heated bath of resin or other material having a higher boiling point than the solvent. The wood is then removed to a bath containing the preservative or other fluid. Long leaf pine is treated in a bath of resin at 320‹ F. from two to six hours, and then with gasoline at normal temperatures from less than one hour to more than twelve hours according to the nature and thickness of the wood. The wood is then immersed in a bath of resin at 320‹ F. or at lower temperatures, and then in the preservative fluid from a few hours to one or two days according to the degree of saturation required.
