The top-plate 1 of the machine supports a rail 2 having grooves 3 in which run rollers 4 attached to the paper carriage 5. To the arms 6 of the carriage are pivoted guide .links 7, the upperends of which receive a shaft 9 which passes through a hollow rod 11 connecting the end-plates 10 of the platen frame. The ends of the shaft 9 project between set-screws 12 and fixed shoulders 12<a>, which form stops to limit the shifting movement of the platen for lower or upper case printing. From the front cross-bar 13 of the platen frame extends a bracket 16, carrying a roller 17 which runs in a grouved shift-rail 18. To the bottom of the rail 2 is adjustably secured, by means of screws 19, a plate 20 to which is pivoted the printing-point indicator 15. Pivoted on the shaft 9, one at each end of the platen frame, are arms 25, the lower ends of which are connected by a rod 26. The upper ends of the arms 25 are formed as plates 27. When the platen frame is swung back on the shaft 9 so as to expose the writing, the plates 27 are frictionally engaged by forked plates 28, Fig. 6, secured to the platen frame. The bar 26 is thus caused to move forward and engage a projection 32 on a horizontal pivoted lever 33, Fig. 5. The other end of the lever 33 is connected by a link 36 with the indicator 15, which is thereby swung up against the platen, against the tension of a spring 38. On moving the platen frame slightly forward, the indicator returns to its normal position, shown in Fig. 1, while the platen frame still remains in its raised position.
