Rail joints; chairs; chair keys and wedges.-A rail joint is constructed so that the usual bolts are replaced by wedge-shaped projections engaging a slot in the chair key. Fig. 4 shows the arrangement ; the chair has an inwardly-extending flange b on one side terminating in an upright flange b<1> which is adapted to wedge between the head and foot of the rail. Projections f, formed integral with, or secured to, the upright flange b<1>, have cylindrical portions which pass through holes in the web of the rail and outer wedge-shaped portions which project beyond the web and engage a similarly-shaped dovetailed slot in the face of the sliding jaw or chair key F. The key is tapered in the direction of its length, and wedges between the rail-head and the undercut shoulder g on the other side of the chair. The projecting pieces and the slot are tapered lengthwise in the opposite direction to the taper of the chair-key, and the projections are preferably spaced the same as the usual bolts so that the arrangement can be applied to old rails. A space is left between the outer ends of the wedge and the inner end of the dovetailed slot. An extension of the chair has ratchet teeth h<3> on its surface engaging with similar teeth on the underside of the head of the bolt H, Fig. 1, which is moved in a slot in the chair up to the wedge, when the latter is driven home, and then tightened. The ratchet teeth prevent the bolt from being moved if the key tends to become slack.
