Abstract

25,796. Drojecki, M. Nov. 26. Reverberatory furnaces; baffles and arches.-A transverse baffle or partition is put across the hearth of a reverberatory furnace for smelting, puddling, melting, &c., in order to flatten the stream of flame against the hearth, and to reduce its velocity. The arch is also protected against the effects of close contact with the flame. The partition must be made of or covered with refractory and badly-conducting material. It extends downwards from the arch, leaving a rectangular or arched opening over the hearth. In Fig. 1, a fixed built-in baffle 2 is shown. It is preferably of masonry, with water pipes 4 which cool it sufficiently to prevent disintegration. Movable baffles are shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The arch 3 is slotted at 5, and the side walls are deeply recessed to receive a flat box-like partition 9, made of metal coated with asbestos. Water flows in by the pipes 11 and leaves by the pipes 13, being directed in a zig-zag path by the metal strips 12. A pulley 14 is provided for convenient hoisting. The arched opening serves to protect the side walls of the furnace against the stream of hot gases and to direct it in the central line of the furnace. The same purpose may be served by baffles fixed or fitted at the sides, as shown in Fig. 5. These are constructed and cooled in the same way as the others. The number of partitions may be two or more, according to the length of the furnace.
