Abstract

25,608. H³lsmeyer, C. Nov. 24. Telemeters.-A Hertzian-wave projecting and receiving apparatus is adapted for locating the position of distant metal objects. In Specification No. 13,170, A.D. 1904, [Abridgment Class Signalling &c.], is described an apparatus for indicating the direction of the object ; the present object is to determine the distance as well. For this purpose, a projector is employed which throws a cylindrical bundle of electric waves and is capable of rotating about a horizontal axis. The projector is first turned in the direction of the metal body, and the angle it makes with the vertical is then altered till the reflected Hertzian effect is a maximum, and from this angle the distance may be calculated. The whole of the apparatus is supported similarly to a ship's compass. The parallel beam of waves may be produced by the aid of reflectors or lenses. In the former case, the angle made with the vertical by the projectors, inside which the reflecting-surface is fixed, may be varied ; and in the latter case the project may be fixed and the lenses vary. This latter case is shown in Fig. 2. On the handle of the instrument being turned, the slides T, U are moved along a longitudinal slot in the projector, and, since the lower ends of the lenses R, S are connected by the link X pivoted at its middle point on to the rod Z, the lenses remain parallel but their common inclination to the projector is varied. This inclination may be attained by a weight sliding on a rod on which a scale is marked.
