Abstract
23,805. Joors, A. M. J., and MÚrcenier, A. V. J. Nov. 18. Range-finders.-Relates to the type of rangefinders in which two telescopes or sighting vanes, having their axes inclined to one another at a small fixed angle, are used at the ends of a base-line of variable length. The vane 1, the axis of which points in a direction at right-angles to the direction of the base-line, is mounted on a sleeve 4, which carries a series of telescoping tubes 3, to the innermost of which is fixed the vane 2. The sleeve 4 is attached by means of a ball-and-socket joint 7, 8 to a clamp 14 by which the instrument may be fixed to any suitable support. The tube 2 carrying the sights is pivoted to a forked support 22, 24, Fig. 6, and can be adjusted in position by the screws 25. In using the instrument, the object is first observed through the sight 1 ; the telescoping tubes 3 are then adjusted until the object can be seen through the sight 2 ; the distance between the sights, measured on the scale 20, gives the range. In a modification for naval purposes, the instrument is mounted by a ball-andsocket joint and levelled by adjustable pendulum weights. The tubes 3 can also be adjusted in the sleeve 4 by a rack and pinion.
