Abstract

24,125. Lindsay, R. Nov. 8. Clutches.-In a conical friction clutch, the female cone 7 is fixed to one shaft 5 and receives the end of the other shaft 6, so as to keep the shafts in line. A ring 10, fixed to the shaft 6 and kept in contact with the member 7 by a flange and split ring 12, carries lugs, to each pair of which one end of the cross-limb of a T-shaped lever 13 is pivoted. The other end of the cross-limb is pivoted to a lug on the male cone 11, which is slidably mounted on 'the shaft 6. One of the pivot holes in the crosslimb is elongated to allow movement of the lever 13. The stem of each of the levers 13 is connected by a link 15 to a sliding sleeve 16 mounted on the shaft 6. The link 15 may be made in two parts coupled together by a screw-and-nut adjustment. Upon moving the sleeve 16 towards the cone 7, the member 8 is brought into engagement with the member 7. The parts are so arranged that the links 15 may be pushed a little beyond a position at right-angles to the shaft so as to lock the clutch members in the engaged position. One or more springs 20 may be arranged between the ring 10 and the boss of the member 8 to retain the parts when out of engagement. The clutch may be applied to a pulley, the pulley being mounted on the boss of the female cone. Shallow grooves may be cut or cast in the conical surfaces of one or both members, such grooves being filled with grease.- The'ring 10 may be used with disc or plate clutches.
