Abstract

23,706. Kunst, J. C. Nov. 2. Paddle-wheels; driving- gear for paddle-wheels.- A paddle-wheel consisting of a water-tight drum 11 provided with long and narrow paddles 12 is driven by means of a steam turbine, electromotor, or other motor placed inside it. To prevent damage to the floats, keels 34 are provided on each side of the paddle-boxes. In the application of a steam turbine to a paddle-wheel, the drum is fixed to and revolves with the outer casing 13 of the turbine, mounted on hollow journals 14, 15, the journal 14 being used to conduct the exhaust steam to the pipe 15<1>. Steam is led to the turbine through the hollow shaft 25, which is rigidly fixed to the inner casing of the turbine 27 and prevented from rotating by bolts 26. The right-hand end of the inner casing is supported by a hollow journal 30<1> in a bearing 31 which is connected with the hollow bearing 14. A small bearing prevents relative longitudinal motion of the inner and outer casings. These bearings are lubricated by means of the tube 34'. To prevent access of water, an inner drum 20 working in a stuffing-box 21 is provided, the space between it and the outer drum 11 being packed with felt impregnated with oil in order to avoid loss of heat. The outer casing of the turbine is also covered with felt.
