Abstract

22,202. Johnson, J. F. Oct. 15. Brakes.-Consists of a brake for motor and other vehicles where a rotating member is required to be pulled up instantly as well as gradually. The emergency blocks 6 and blocks 13 for ordinary use are carried by frames 5, 10, which are linked together by rods 14 and are pivoted at 7 to a fixed central boss 8. The operating-lever 15 is pivoted to the boss and carries a pin 16, by means of which the brakes are applied. Fig. 1 shows the blocks 13 retracted and the blocks 6 applied to the brake drum 4 on the axle 3, which rotates in the direction of the arrow. The effect is to jam the blocks 6 and stop the rotation instantly. Fig. 2 shows the blocks 13 in use, the braking being graduated by the pull applied to the lever 15.
