Abstract

20,003. Birkeland, K., and Eyde, S. Sept. 19, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Electric furnaces.-An arc furnace is constructed as shown in vertical section for the oxidation or reduction of solids such as ores, in powder or moulded into briquettes, with or without carbon. The furnace has two flat vertical walls 1, 2 at a short distance apart, and the arc is formed between two electrodes 7 which project horizontally or vertically between the walls, The electrodes may be of carbon or metal, and may be hollow to admit air, hydrogen, or other gas to the furnace. The arc is spread by the action of the field of a large electromagnet 10, 12, the pole-pieces of which carry curved iron arms 13. The solid material may be fed to the arc in a thin stream from a hopper 15 ; solid products fall into a space 19, while gases pass through conduits 17.
