Abstract

19,734. Knight, A. W. Sept. 13. Nails.-Relates to nails for the shoes of horses and other animals. The head of the nail a, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is made convex on one side, and concave on the other side to fit into the curved groove &c. of the shoe. The head may be elongated to form a frost-nail or roughing-stud. As shown in Figs. 6 to 10, the projecting head retains the concavo-convex shape and is chamfered or bevelled to form a gouge-shaped edge d. The head may be broadened to form shoulders e which bear upon the bottom of the crease or groove in the shoe to obviate any liability of loosening by concussion. The projecting portion of the head is hardened to resist wear, while the portion of the head in the groove or fullering is left soft to accommodate itself to the walls of the crease. Nails are preferably employed having grooved shanks. By this means, the inward drawing tendency upon the shoe is avoided.
