Description
No. 819,016. PATENTED APR. 24, 1906-- A. W. JONES. ELASTIC TEEAD HORSESHOE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 26 1905.
UNITED s'rA'rns PATENT onnion.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed September 26, 1905. Serial No. 280,127.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. Jonas, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.v Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Elastic- Tread Horseshoes, 0 which the following is a the intermediate portions between the toe and heel contracted in width to form insets on the outer sides of said channel and provide spaces at the sides of the shoe on the outer sides of said contracted intermediate portions for the nail-holes, so that the nail-holes are clear of and on the outer sides of the intermediate portions ofthe channel, in combination with an elasticcushion to fit in the said channel havin its heel portion widened to fit'in the widened portionsof the heel portions of the channel and provided at its toe portion with a forwardly-projecting flange to ock under the widened toe portion of said channel, the heel portions of the shoe and of the cushion having coengaging flanges and grooves to look the widened heel portions of the cushion in the widened heel ortions of the channel in the shoe, as. hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is artly an inverted plan viewand partly a horizontal sectional view of an elastic-tread horseshoe embod g my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectiona view of the toe portion of the shoe. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the intermediate portion of the shoe, and Fi s. 4 and 5 are sectional views, one longitudinal and one transverse, of one of the heel portions of the shoe. I
In the embodiment of my invention I provide the metallic horseshoe-body a with a channel I) on its under side, which extends entirely around the shoe from its heel portions to its toe portion and forms an inner flange c and an outer flange d. The outer flan e d has its intermediate portions between the heels ahd the toes inset to form shoulders e to contract thewidth of the channel between the heel portions and the toe ortion of the shoe and provide spaces on t e outer sides of the shoe for the nailioles g, so that the :5 nail-holes are in the outer side and entirely clear of the channel. The said spaces f are with inwardlyprojecting flan 'es 'i.
here shown as beveled to strengthen theouter flange and to im rove the appearance of the shoe. The Wi ened heel ortions h of the channel formed in rear 0 the inset shoulders e are provided at their rear ends The toe portion of the channel under the toe-calk k is widened, as at m, so that the toe-call; forms an overhanging flange over the front side of the channel at the toe thereof.
In connection with the horseshoe-body I provide a cushion 1, which is prefera ly made of rubber and which is adapted to fitin the channel of the horseshoe-body. At the front or toe end of the said cushion is a flange 2, which is adapted to enter the recess m thereunder, the overhanging toe-call; coacting with the flange formed on the cushion to lock the toe of the cushion in place in the. toe portion of the channel. The-heel portions of the cushion are widened on their outer sides, as at 3, to fit in the widened heel portions h of the channel andto form shoulders 4, which .by en agement with the shoulders e of the horses oe-body prevent the cushion from creeping or moving longitudinally in the channel. In the sides of the heel portions in the cushion are rooves 5 for the reception of the flanges t at t e heel portions of the horseshoe-body. Said grooves and said flanges coast to lock the heel portions of the cushion securely to the heel body, while admitting of the ready removal of the cushion from the horseshoe-body when the cushion becomes worn and it becomes desirable or necessary to replace it with a new one. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A horseshoe having a channel in its lower side widened at the toe and heel, provided with inwardly-extending flanges at the toe and heel, and having the intermediate por tions between the toe and heel contracted to. form insets on the outer sides of said channel ,1 in combination with a detachable elastic cushion shaped to fit the irregularities of said channel, substantially as described.
2. A horseshoe having a channel in its lower portions of the horseshoeside, widened at the toe and heel, provided sides of said contracted intermediate portions for the nail-holes so that the nail-holes are clear and on the outer sides of the intermediate portions of the channel, in combination with a detachable elastic cushion shaped to fit the irregularities of said channel, substantially as described.
3. A horseshoe having a channel in its lower side, widened at the toe and heel, provided with inwardly-extending flanges at the toe and heel, and having the intermediate portions between the toe and heel contracted to form insets on the outer sides of said channel and provide spaces in the shoe on the outer sides of said contracted intermediate portions for the nail-holes so that the nail-holes are clear and on the outer sides of the intermediate portions of the channel, in combination the widened toe and heel portions of the channel, said cushion having a flange at its toe portion to engage the recess at the toe por-' portion to receive the flanges at the heel portions of the channel and to detachably look I the toe and heel portions of the cushionin stantially as described.
with a detachable elastic cushion to fit in said channel and having widened portions to fit in 20 tion of the shoe and having grooves in its heel the toe and heel portions of the channel, sub- In'testimony whereof I have signed my 0 name to this specification in the presence of
