Abstract

19,171. McDermott, J. H. Sept. 5. Spikes.-Relates to dog-spikes for securing railroad rails to wood sleepers. The body of the spike is scored and serrated as shown at D, and pinched in or reduced at E, just above the point of the spike, the object being to prevent the loosening of the spike due to vibration. The claw-head B is enlarged and serrated on its underside so as to minimize the creep of the rails. Enlarged lugs G are provided to assist the extraction of the spike from the sleeper when necessary. To prolong the life of the spike, it is heavily galvanized on the whole of its exterior surface.
