Abstract

18,743. Walton, A. R. Aug. 30. Metal, sheet, seaming and joining; making pipes and tubes.-Metal sheets are joined together to form larger sheets or pipes by a joining-bar which is so shaped that one side of the joint has a protuberance and the other is smooth. The joining- bar C is of trough section and has on each side a groove. The edges B of the sheets A to be joined together are bent over, waved, corrugated, or expanded and inserted in the grooves and the whole subjected to pressure, preferably by rolling, whereby the side edges of the bar are bent over and secure the edges of the sheets. Fig. 1 shows a pipe formed from two sheets A of metal and having its exterior smooth, while Fig. 2 shows a pipe having its interior smooth. The invention also applies to the construction of tapered pipes and to joining flat or other shaped sheets of metal together, in which one surface is required to be finished smooth.
