Abstract
18,342. Phelps, J. W. Aug. 24. Incandescent lamps. - L a m p s, especially those with two filaments for emitting light of different intensities, are constructed with switches operable by means of cords from a distance. The lamp base may be made to fit the ordinary types of holders, and consists of cylindrical metal sections 10, 11 fitted one within the other and fastened together. In the end of the section 10 the globe 12 is fixed by means of suitable cement 13, which also serves to hold in place a thin plate 19 of insulating-material carrying the switch. A cord 24 passing through eyelets 25 serves to actuate the switch arm 21, and is carried to any convenient point. The two filaments are placed in series, and the free end of the high-power filament 28 is connected to one terminal 17 of the lamp, carried by a porcelain plate 16. The other terminal 18 is connected to the switch arm. The free end of the low-power filament and the junction of the two filaments are connected respectively to two contact-studs 26, 27 on the plate 19. As the arm 21 is rotated from the position shown in Fig. 3, it first meets the stud 26, thereby sending a current through the two filaments in series, the filament 29 alone becoming incandescent, and then short-circuits the low-power filament, the highpower filament 28 becoming incandescent.
