Abstract

17,366. Lea, W. C. Aug. 9. Brakes.-A rim brake, of general application but specially adapted for carrier tricycles, comprises a shaft c which rotates in the brackets b fixed near the driving-wheels d beneath the carrier box a. The shaft has at each end two arms e, f, of which one e is fixed to the shaft while the other f can rotate relatively to the shaft. The shoe j on the tree arm holds the brake block i, which acts on the rim of the wheel, and at the back of the shoe a stud k projects through the fixed arm e and has the nut m screwed on it, the spring n normally keeping the two arms e, f apart. An arm o at the middle of the shaft c. operates the brake by the lever p and the piece q, and the blade spring r keeps the blocks clear of the rims of the driving-wheels when the lever is not depressed. In a modification, the shaft c is divided at the middle, additional brackets b being provided, and arms at the centre ends of the two parts of the shaft are operated by a cord or the like passing over a pulley fixed to the piece q. In another modification, there is only one arm e with a brake block rigidly attached to the shaft.
