Abstract

1 4 , 8 3 9. Sanson, R. A. Grimoin-. Jan. 15, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Waterproof fabrics; waterproofing-compositions.- An impermeable product, of use in the manufacture of hats and clothes, is obtained by cementing sheet cork to leather, canvas, and fabrics of all descriptions. The cork is previously heated with a mixture of benzine, turpentine, or carbon disulphide, glycerine, hydrochloric acid, and para rubber to render it less brittle. The fabric &c., freed from dust and stretched on a tentering-roller, is passed beneath a distributing-roller and covered with a layer of cement containing 10 litres of petroleum ether, 50 grammes of acetone, and 1 kilog. of caoutchouc (allowed to macerate in the mixture 48 hours before using the solution). The sheets of cork are automatically arranged on the layer of cement, and the compound fabric &c. is passed between three sets of rollers with progressively-increasing pressure, into a stove kept at 60‹ C., over steam-heated copper rollers, and finally into a ventilated stove which completes the drying and removes the odour of the solvents &c. employed.
