Abstract

14,747. Shiels, A. June 30. Tim e - checking apparatus for workmen. The time when a paper strip F, Fig. 2, is stamped or signed is recorded by depressing a lever D which brings the strip against one or more clock-actuated type-discs A. The lever D is linked to a shorter one L' having a pawl L pivoted at its other end. A spring on the second lever L<1> presses this pawl against a ratchetwheel connected to the paper-winding drum, the paper strip being advanced when the first lever D is released. An arm on the second lever L<1> has a nipping-device which moves an inking-ribbon G across the type-disc at the same type. This ribbon is kept taut by a spring-pressed roller. A hammer N' on the pawl strikes a bell N when the first lever is depressed, to show that the printing has taken place. When one type-disc is employed, it is mounted loosely on the hour-hand spindle of a clock, from which it is driven through a spring, one end of which is fixed to a pinion, while the other is attached to a pin on the disc above. A stop pin on the disc enters a recess in this pinion, and prevents the spring from unwinding. This enables the clock to advance when the disc is held fast by the first lever, and to pull the disc into proper position when the lever is released. Each hour is preferably divided by numerals into fifteenminute, and by marks into five-minute, periods, a fixed pointer also printing on each section of the strip. A minute-disc may also be used, and mounted concentrically with the hour-disc, being dished so that its edge is flush with the latter. It may be rotated independently of or by the hourdisc, or may rotate the hour-disc constantly, or intermittently. If the hour-disc is moved constantly, the numerals on it are repeated, preferably five times. The hour and minute discs may be mounted eccentrically, and connected by pawl and ratchet mechanism. An additional disc may be employed to print seconds, and either disc may bear the letters "a.m." and "p.m.," or these letters may be carried by another disc operated by the clock or from one of the other discs. In one double-disc arrangement, Fig. 5, the hour and minute-discs are mounted eccentrically, the minutedisc A' being driven from the clock through a train and safety spring C. The bour-disc B is loosely mounted, and has a ratchet-wheel held by springs B<4>, B<5>. On the hour-disc spindle is pivoted a piece carrying a pawl B<2> for this ratchet-wheel, this piece being spring-pressed and moved back by a cam A<2> on the minute-disc spindle. By this means, the pawl advances the hour-disca twelfth of a revolution for each resolution of the minute-disc.
