SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,900, dated. October 15, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBENEZER H. ROGERS, J r., of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time Stamps, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to time-stamps for imprinting upon a document or paper the date, time of day, and other suitable information which it is desired said document or paper should bear.
I will describe in detail a time-stamp embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the claims.

Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the drawings, in which A represents the platform, upon which is a frame B. On the top of this frame is a bed 0, provided with bearings a, adapted to receive the bearings of a shaft carrying the polygonal prism D, (see Fig. 12,) the edges of which are provided with grooves 19, adapted to receive the toe of the spring c,secured to the under side of the bed aforesaid. This polygonal prism D is to be operated by turning a WheelD (shown only in Fig. 15) with the hand, and is held in place by the aforesaid spring a. At its ends the bed O is provided with rollers (Z, adapted to carry an inking-ribbon. By this means the inking-ribbon may be adjusted and carried over the bed aforesaid in the usual manner.
E, Figs. 1 and 3, represents the main driving-shaft having the hour type-wheel F rigidly mounted thereon. Upon this shaft E is sleeved the minute type-wheel G, and upon the sleeve of this wheel Gis sleeved the A. M. So and P. M. type-sector H. There is also sleeved on the shaft E, on the opposite side of the hour type-wheel F, the day type wheel 1. Upon the sleeve of the said wheel I is sleeved the month type-sector K.
All the type wheels and sectors mentioned above, together with the year type-sector L, (see Fig. 10,) are arranged and are supported from the shaft E. They are also operated independently of each other between the vertical sides of the frame B. Upon that portion of the sleeve of the day wheel I projecting beyond the frame B is rigidly mounted the ratchet-wheel M, provided with thirty-one teeth which engage with the stop-pawl N, held against said wheel by means of the spring 6, bearing upon the pin f, made fast to the body of the said pawl N. There is rigidly fixed to the shaft E, in front of the ratchetwheel M, the star-wheel 0, adapted to engage with the stop-pawl P, which is held against the said star-wheel O by means of the spring g, bearing upon the pin It, made fast to said pawl P. There is also pivotally mounted upon the front side of the frame B the deerfoot pawl R, the toe i of this pawl being adapted to engage with the teeth of the aforesaid ratchet-wheel M. A portion of this pawl has a curved extension R, which, should the wheel M, from its momentum or other cause, be turned violently farther than the proper distance, is made to rise by the blows of the teeth against the toe 1', and thus catch against the teeth of said wheel and allow the pawl N to take its proper place, There is connected with the arm carrying the aforesaid deer-foot pawl R one end of the connecting-rod S, the other end of this rod being connected with the pawl T. The latter is mounted upon one end of the spring is. The other end of said spring is secured to a fulcrumed arm is, and the end of the latter bears upon the conical portion of an adjusting-screw 10 The toe of the pawl T engages with the cam T, (see Fig. 13,) mounted upon a short shaft V impelled by the rotation of the hour-hand shaft of the clock-movement. There is also fulcrumed to the front side of the frameB the arm T ,.carrying on its upper end the deer-foot pawl T adapted to engage with the ratchet-wheel T mounted on the shaft T carrying the pinion T the teeth of which mesh with those of the pinion T (see Fig. 5,) which is mounted on a stud secured to the frame B. This pinionv T carriesthe spider-wheel T the arms T of which engage with the toe or arm T of the A. M. and P. M. sector H, which is also provided with the seconds-arm T, which presses against the retracting-spring T whenever the arm ortoe T is raised by either of the arms of the said spider-wheel, so that when the toe shall have dropped from the arm of the spider the spring T will carry the arm back to its normal position, thus carrying the sector H likewise. The arm T is also connected with one end of the connecting-rod T the other end of which is connected with the pawl V, the toe of which is adapted to engage with the cam V, rigidly fixed to the short shaft of the clockmovement. This pawl V is mounted and secured to the frame of the clock-movement similar to that of the pawl T, hereinbefore mentioned. There is also mounted upon the front of the frame B the stop-pawl V adapted to engage with the ratchet-wheel T. This pawl V is mounted the same as the pawl P, mentioned above.
Referring to Fig. 2, E is the main drivingshaft of the type-wheels. Upon this shaft E is mounted the ratchet-wheel D, adapted to engage with the deer-foot pawl D secured to the arm D fulcrumed to the rear side of the frame B. Said arm D is connected with one end of the connecting-rod D The other end of the latter is connected with the pawl D which is mounted on one end of the springblade D The other end of the latter is secured to-the arm D fulcrumed to the frame of the clock-movement. The end of the said arm D bears upon the conical portion of an adjusting-screw D adapted to be operated to increase or decrease the tension of the spring' blade D The toe of said pawl D engages with the cam D mounted on the hour-hand shaft of the clock-movement.
On that portion of the minute type-wheel sleeve projecting beyond the rear portion of the frame B is rigidly fixed the ratchet-wheel D provided with sixty teeth adapted to engage with the deer-foot pawl D secured to the fulcrumed arm D With the body of the latter is connected one end of the connecting-rodD the other end of which is connected with the arm D, the lower end of which is secured to one end of the springblade D The other end of the latter is secured to the fulcrumed arm D one end .of which bears upon the conical portion of an adj listing-screw D There is connected with the arm D the pawl or toe D adapted to engage with the ratchet-wheel E, mounted on the hour-hand shaft of the clock-movement. Said ratchet-wheel E is provided with sixty teeth. Behind the milled head'E is fixed a pinion adapted to engage with the gear-wheel E Said milled head is operated when setting the machine ready for action. There is also fulcrumed to the rear side of the frame B the stop-pawl E adapted to be in constant contact with theratchet-wheel D This pawl wE, like the other pawls, is held in. position by means of a spring.
To the side of the frame B behind the ratchet-wheel D is secured one end of the spring F, the other end of which is provided with the locking-pin F adapted to engage with the perforations F (see Figs. 10 and 11) of the year type-sector L, the web L of which is split and sprung over the flanged collar L secured to the inside of the frame B.
Upon the inner side of frame B, and beneath the month-sector K, is secured an arm K, the upper end of which bears a springactuated toe or trip K face of the day-wheel is secured a metallic spring-ring K the lower portion of which is provided with a toe or projection K slightly curved outwardly, as shown more clearly in Figs. 7 and 9. The spring-ring K is sunk within a recess upon the face of the daywheel of sufficient depth that normally the toe K will not engage the beveled ratchetteeth It upon the lower side of the monthsector K. When, however, the day-wheel I has rotated far enough, the projection or toe K will come into contact with the inclined face an of trip K and be moved outward into the space between the teeth of the monthsector K, where, upon further movement, it will cause thesaid sector to turn a distance equal to the distance between two of its teeth. When the toe K has passed the trip K it will spring back into its position in the recess in the day-wheel. When it is expedient or necessary, the day-wheel or month-sector may be turned backward, the toe K passing Upon the adjacent over the trip K which is provided with a spring a? to return it to and hold it in its normal position. There is also the pawl K secured to the frame B beneath the month-sector K, said pawl being adapted to engage with the circumferential ratchet of said sector K.
It must be observed that all of the deerfoot pawls, together with the trip or toe heretofore mentioned, are provided with the springs a adapted to hold their parts intheir normal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, a frame, a cam mounted to turn therein, an arm pivoted or fulcrumed' to said frame and carrying at one end a spring-pawl bearing upon the cam, and an adjustable conical screw in said frame bearing upon the free end of the arm to regulate the force with which the spring-pawl shall bear upon the cam.
2. In a time-stamp, the combination of the time mechanism, the indicator mechanism, including the ratchet-Wheel M, a deer-foot pawl R, mounted in the frame of the indicator mechanism in position to engage the wheel M, and connected with the time mechanism, to be oscillated thereby, the said pawl having a toe 2' and curved extension R, substantially as shown, and for the purpose stated.
3. A time-stamp having the shaft E, the indicator-wheel F and ratchet fixed thereon, the Wheels I ,and G, provided with sleeves also provided with ratchets, the said Wheels being arranged on the shaft on opposite sides of the wheel F, the sectors H and K, turning on the sleeves of the wheels I and G, and the sector L, means, substantially as described, for operating the sector K from the wheel I, combined with time mechanism, with cams and pawls mounted upon the frames of the indicator and time mechanisms, and suitable connections between them, whereby the indicator wheels and sectors are operated from the time mechanism, as described.
4. The combination, with time mechanism, of time-indicator mechanism comprising a main shaft, time-indicators supported upon said shaft, ratchets and pawls for operating said indicators mounted upon the time-indicator frame, ratchets and pawls mounted upon the frame for the time mechanism, connections between said pawls, arms upon which said pawls are borne, and adjusting devices acting on said arms for varying the resistance of the pawls, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with time mechanism, of time-indicator mechanism, ratchets and pawls for the indicator mechanism, and suitable connections between the time mechanism and the time-indicator mechanism,whereby the latter may be operated by the former, and a setting device consisting of a shaft having a turning head and a pinion to engage a gear on the hour-shaft, by which both the time mechanism and the time-indicator mechanism may be set in unison, substantially as specified.
6. The combination, in a hand-stamp, of the shaft E, sleeved day or type wheel I, ratchetwheel M, and a self-adjusting deer-foot pawl provided with an extension adapted to catch the said ratchet-Wheel M when another pawl is being released therefrom.
