14,005. Klein, J. June 21. Stuffing-boxes.-Relates to a liquid seal for a pump stuffing-box. Fig. 1 shows a centrifugal pump with one form of the liquid seal attached. a indicates the pump suction chamber, b the bush or the like, c an annular chamber surrounding the bush, d an open reservoir connected with the chamber c, g an overflow pipe, and f a source of water supply which may be either the discharge chamber of the pump or any other source. By adjusting the tap, the water may be supplied to the reservoir at the same rate as it passes through the packing, bush, or part to be sealed. In a modification, the reservoir d is replaced by a vertical pipe connecting the chamber c with the tap f and open to the atmosphere through an overflow pipe. The quantity of water flowing through the reservoir or pipe indicates the state of the bush.
