Abstract

13,933. Boult, A. J., [Dodge, N.]. June 20. Wood, treating.-Bass, birch, cherry, white pine, poplar, Oregon pine, and other woods for making secondary-battery separators or diaphragms which are impervious to battery sediment are deprived of acids, such as acetic acid and other constituents which attack lead when subjected to electrolytic action, by soaking them for from one to two days in water containing either sulphuric acid or an alkali, such as caustic potash, and preferably heated. The material is subsequently washed in running water. The action-may be accelerated by heating the solutions, and the separators are kept wet until they are placed in the battery liquid as, when dry, they have the property of warping, shrinking, curling, and splitting.
