Fire-tongs.-The arms of brass and other firetongs are connected by pivot joints in which the side cheeks are connected rigidly, generally by casting them in one with the handle, so as to prevent side play. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the arm 1 and the handle connection 2 are cast in one with the side cheeks and the boss 5 of the pivot, with which the recessed head 7 of the arm 6 is engaged. The parts are secured by the screw 10 and the filling-piece 8. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the head 15 is secured by a pin or rivet 16 passed through side cheeks 4 integral with the arm 1. Fig. 7 shows another form in which the boss 17 is slotted for the passage of the pin 10, and Fig. 8* shows a filling-piece 8 secured by a lug 32 entering a recess in the arm 1, and a pin 31 connecting the side cheeks 4. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the lug 21 on the arm 1, and the pivot 17 on the arm 6, are secured by a filling-piece 20 ; the side cheeks are cast with the handle 2 or with the piece 20. Fig. 16 shows a spring hinge, the spring 28 being slipped into a notch 29.
