Abstract

12,891. Lake, H. H., [Miller, T. S.]. June 7. Hauling and winding drums and sheaves.-Relates to a friction-clutch mechanism, actuated by toggles, in which a wide range of pressure is obtainable, the operating parts being constructed so as to be self-locking and the friction between the rotating and non-rotating elements of the clutch-operating mechanism thus greatly diminished. Figs. 1 and 3 show the invention applied to a rope drum. The drum B carrying the clutch surface b is loosely mounted on the revolving shaft A, to which the wheel C carrying the other clutch surface c is keyed. The parts B, C are kept apart by the spring D, and longitudinal pressure is taken up by the fixed and adjustable abutments E, E<1>. The hand-operated screw G works in the nut F and pushes forwards the member H, which rotates with the shaft. At the forward end of this member is formed a wedge 1, which forces apart the links 2, 3 hinged respectively at 4, 5 to a collar 6 which also rotates with the shaft. Another collar 7 carried by the shaft rests against the movable clutch member B. The links 8, 9 form with the links 2, 3 a pair of toggles on opposite sides of the shaft axis, as shown in Fig. 3. The wedge 1 and the whole of the toggle mechanism are located in a slot in the shaft with which they rotate. The wedge is made of small angle, so that the pressure of the toggles is powerless to move it. In a modification, the shape of the toggles is slightly altered, and the wedge 1 forms a swivel connection with the member H. Fig. 8 shows another modification applied to a pulley, in which the clutch is actuated by a lever. The collars 6, 7 and the toggles are arranged as shown in Fig. 3, but. the wedge is divided into two parts 1<a>, 1<b> resting against the outside of the shaft, which, in this form, is not slotted. In another modification, shown in Fig. 14, the toggles are symmetrically placed and hinged, and the wedge is curved, as shown, so as to operate the clutch quickly at first and more gradually afterwards. The wedge 1<a> in this case has a swivel connection with the end of the operating- screw G. The extreme unset position of the toggles is shown in dotted lines.
