Abstract
12,236. Hewitt, F. B., and Bass, S. C. May 30. Conveyers.-Relates to freight-handling apparatus for loading and unloading railway cars, vessels, &c. Fig. 1 shows a plan and Fig. 3 a section on the line y. Mounted on rollers 23 in a framing is an endless track, consisting of outer rails 5 and inner rails 7 connected together by cross-bars 16, 19, and bent laterally at one end so as to lie within a car or over a ship's hatch. Rollers 43 carrying hooks or the like 48, run in the space between the inner and outer rails and are pulled along by an endless chain 11, which is guided round sprocket-wheels 9, 10, &c. and is driven by means of a sprocket 26 and gearing. The track is adjusted longitudinally on the rollers 23 by means of a rope coiled on a drum 33 and having its ends connected to the track in opposite directions. The lateral extension of the track is fitted with jaws 22 adapted to engage the roof of the car &c.
