Abstract
11,398. Hargreaves, J. May 18. Varnishes; waterproof paints.-The products of the distillation of tar are combined with resin to form compositions for waterproofing, disinfecting, &c. and for indurating building-materials. Paraffin wax or saponifiable oils and siccative are sometimes added. Suitable tar derivatives are creosote, anthracene oil, naphtha, naphthalene, carbolic acid, and cresylic acid. Pigments, preferably metallic oxides or alkaline earths, may be added to the varnishes to form paints, or a coating of lime wash, coloured or not, may be applied prior to the application of the varnish.
