Abstract
10,882. British Thomson-Houston Co., and Holden, F. May 11. Quantity meters.-A motor meter, in which the current flows through cross-connected strips on a cylinder or disc rotating in mercury, is provided with means to prevent surging and spilling of the mercury when the meter is moved. In the form shown, the metal cylinder 1 is entirely insulated from the mercury and carries a series of eight strips or plates, exposed at their ends to the mercury filling the annular space between the circular pole-piece 7 and the four pole-pieces 10 with the insulating-matenal 23. The cross-connections between the strips are preferably not mounted on the armature but embedded in the insulating-material and exposed at their ends to the mercury just below one pole-piece and above the next. The insulated diaphragm 16 confines the mercury except for the apertures 18,19, while the cap 13 with a depending tube 17 entirely prevents its escape, even if the meter is inverted. Any number of pole-pieces may be used, and an electromagnet may be used instead of a permanent magnet.
