Abstract

10,050. Boult, A. J., [United Shoe Machinery Co.]. May 2. Bristles, fixing; boot and shoe cleaning and polishing brushes; rotary brushes; stocks.-Relates to brushes in which strips of canvas, strawboard, or the like and layers of bristles are placed alternately and clamped together in a stock, and consists in the introduction of' cords, wires, or the like 7, Fig. 2, which lock the bristles in place and prevent them from being pulled out. The device is shown applied to a rotary brush, but it may be applied to brushes generally. The locking effect of the wires 7 is best produced by placing them out of line on opposite sides of the bristles and in line on opposite sides of the strips 5, which, for a general binding effect, should be of somewhat soft material, such as strawboard, so as to afford the wires a partial bedding. In rotary brushes, the cords or wires help to keep the parts of the brushes together at high speeds. The cords or wires 7 are secured to the strips 5 by zig-zag sewing 8 as shown in Fig. 3 or otherwise. The bristles and strips are put together with glue, and clamped in place between the jaws 3, 4 of a stock made as in Fig. 2, which enables a set of bristles to be replaced when worn. If only one layer of bristles is required, intermediate strips 5 are unnecessary, or the wires 7 may be placed directly against the flanges 3, 4 without using strips. If desired, more than one wire or cord may be applied to one side of any or all the strips. The rotary brush described is adapted, amongst other things, for finishing boots and shoes.
