Abstract

9207. Schleyder, C. April 21. Combustion products, returning to furnaces ; air supply, regulating; doors; baffles.-Relates to locomotive and other furnaces, and consists in conveying soot and the like from the flues and smokebox to the furnace with a regulated supply of air to effect its combustion. The smokebox 2, Fig. 1, is in communication with the furnace by means of a pipe 1, which, as shown in Fig. 4, is connected to a branch 9 on the pipe 8. The bottom end of the pipe 8 is fastened to the bottom of the ashpit and is provided with a disc valve 14 for regulating the supply of air, which is induced by steam jets issuing from a tubular ring 16 in connection with the boiler. The upper end of the pipe 8 enters a tube 19 of refractory material, mounted upon several grate-bars which are broken off to allow for the passage of the tube. The broken bars are supported and held in position by bolts 22 which are fastened to the ordinary bars. Soot and the like are drawn through the pipe 1 from the smoke-box and forced through the tube 19 against the baffle 6, after which they mix with the flames and are consumed. Baffles 42,43 deflect the gaseous products to the lower rows of boiler tubes. Air is also admitted to the pipe 1 at its front end by means of an air inlet fitted to the pipe 24, as shown in Fig. 8. The air inlet consists of a series of pipes 30, which may be tapered towards their inner ends. The pipes are of different lengths and are mounted within plates 28, 29, and have at their outer ends a rotatable disc 32, provided with an arc-shaped slot so arranged that the ends of the pipes may be wholly or partially closed. Instead of this device, a simple disc-valve may be fitted as shown in Fig. 1. The fire-door, Figs. 1 and 3, is formed with tubes 35 to admit air in regulable quantities. The outer ends of the tubes may be closed, as required, by perforated rotatable discs 37, 38 mounted upon a spindle 36. If the quantity of air passing through the disc is insufficient, the supply may be augmented by unscrewing the spindle 36, in which case a passage 41 is formed between the door and the discs.
